Armourer

The role of the Armourer is to maintain the small arms, machine guns and Infantry Support Weapons in a unit. They use hand and machine tools, gauges and precision measuring instruments to inspect, repair and modify weapons and associated equipment.

The Armourer trade is unique in that you could be expected to carry out mechanical repairs on a variety of equipments, not necessarily weapon related. These could include riveting, turning, brazing, woodwork, etc all of which are always expected to be of the highest standard. You are generally thought of as the Regimental repair team.

Minimum Entry Standards: Previous Service as a military armourer, or qualified working as an armourer in a police or government establishment.

CPL JEFFERY - ARMOURER CLASS 1 FROM HYTHE, KENT 104 BN REME (V)

I am an ex Regular Armourer of 14 years and have been in the TA for nearly 5 years.

There are plenty of chances to get away on nice little trips, mainly due to the fact that Armourers can work well on their own. There are trips to Belize, Gibraltar, Germany and Canada and I have been to most. It gives you a great sense of achievement to come back with a good report.

The trade also gives some scope to work on larger equipment eg, 120mm Challenger 2, 105mm Light Gun and the tracked field gun AS90. All of these weapons were formally for the Gun Fitter trade which merged with the Armourers to form one weapons trade. You are instructed on most weapon systems, but there are times when you do come across either a mount or weapon that may not be familiar to you. This is where experience and time on equipment comes in handy. The TA allows you this time either on courses or on deployment in support of regular units.

All of this - and more - is available to you via the Territorial Army - the professional part-time unit.
