Metalsmith

Metalsmiths manufacture, repair and modify tools and components from ferrous and non-ferrous metals, alloys and sheet metals. They use welding, sheet metalwork and the skills of the blacksmith in their trade. The metalsmith uses patterns, sketches and engineering drawings to fabricate parts and to make items as varied as a simple drop-down barrier to an engine component requiring special heat treatments to give it strength or hardness.

Minimum entry standards: Must be below the age of 37 on entry and hold either City and Guilds 228 Mechanical Engineering Level 2, or 019 Basic Engineering Competences, or NVQ Level 2 Engineering Production with specific experience in oxy-acetylene welding and sheet metal work.

Cpl Ryan of 207 Company 104 Battalion

"I have been in Specialist REME TA for 18 years, employed as a metalsmith working on many different vehicles and Army equipment, from Land Rovers to Main Battle Tanks. The work is always varied and challenging with no two jobs the same. With the ever-changing needs and roles of the TA/regular army this work has now become more critical which, in turn, has led to the TA performing an even more vital role in today's operations around the globe.

The TA has given me the opportunity to travel to various countries from rainy Germany to sunny Cyprus, as well as many parts of the UK. At last year's two week camp we were attached to a Regular Army unit in Osnabruck Germany, where we worked on key equipment prior to being sent to the Gulf.

Recently I have been identified as a potential Artificer. As a prerequisite to this, I have completed and passed the REME senior military certificate (SMC). This course is designed to prepare JNCO's for promotion to Sergeant status in the Corps by providing positive leadership training in military subjects. I thoroughly enjoyed this challenging course, especially as I finished 4th out of 24. I now eagerly await my promotion to Sergeant as soon as a vacancy appears.

I have also taken part in a lot of Adventurous Training, which I really enjoy as I am a keen skier. I have had the opportunity to attend several skiing courses and my next step is to qualify as an instructor

I really enjoy TA life and have gained many new friends, learnt from new experiences and travelled extensively.
